MILLICENT AND MAVIS MAKE A PICTURE BOOK:
8 chapters 4th grade reading level
Millicent Woods and Mavis Black are housemates and work colleagues. They are partners who write and illustrate the successful Mavis and Millicent Young Adult Mystery Series. When they attempt to make a children’s picture book, humor, and conflict swing into full tilt. They fight like cats and dogs, because…well…they are a cat and dog.
In the little town of Beechgrove near the larger metropolis of Moss City everyone is an animal. Friend, Ms. Darlene is the donkey postmistress. Another friend and local farmer, Mr. Bibs, is a Scottish highland steer. The two encourage Millicent and Mavis into the picture book project. The project has challenges which seem insurmountable. Mavis doesn’t like young children, and her writing is too scary for them. Millicent loves children. She paints lovely illustrations for them, but the images have no connected story line. Both author and illustrator are humiliated by their failures.
Failure does not last. On an enchanted art-filled evening, surrounded by friends both adult and children, the cat and dog finally co-operate. They create a successful picture book. Most important, they learn how to listen without arguing.
